Clifton Spine Notes

Kyphosis Rounded Upper Back

An older woman pushes a rolling shopping cart and chooses greens at a market stall.

If you have noticed your upper back rounding, you are most likely near the start of the timeline, with plenty of questions and few answers yet.

Diagnosis stays with your clinician. Dated photos and a short task list are the two records worth starting while you wait.

What kyphosis is

The NHS describes kyphosis as a curve in the spine that makes the top of your back look hunched or rounded.

That description tells you what to look for. How quickly the curve changes and what caused yours are questions for a clinician.

Early on: start a dated record

Take a side-on photo while standing relaxed, in similar clothes, every few months. Date each one. Two photos a year apart are easier to compare than your memory of how you stood.

Then write down the everyday tasks that have become harder, such as reaching a high shelf or driving, with the date you first noticed each. If pain ever travels into a leg, that is a separate topic, and an overview of sciatica is one place to start reading about it.

The change that signals the next stage

Which stage you are in is something only a clinician can judge. These changes are worth raising with a clinician, whether in Clifton or elsewhere, without trying to guess what they mean:

  • A change in your shape that you can see from one season to the next
  • New pain that wakes you at night
  • New numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • A task you could do last year that you can no longer do

Other spine topics you may run into

Reading about back pain turns up many treatments, including epidural steroid injections. Seeing one named does not mean it applies to kyphosis or to you. Whether it does is a question for a clinician.

One question to take to your appointment

Ask this: given what you see in my upper back today, which change would make you want to see me sooner?

Bring the dated photos and the task list so the answer rests on your own record. Start both this month.
